10 Important Reasons to Support National Children's Dental Health Month

Feb 8 • 1 minute read

A group of happy kids.

February is an important month for dentists all across the country. Since 1949, February has been the time we nationally recognize the importance of children's oral health. It's a good opportunity to look back on huge steps forward in children's dentistry, and it's a good time to think about ways we can improve treatment and access for all children.

When we think about why children's dental health is important to us, these are 10 reasons we stand behind the mission of National Children's Dental Health Month:

  1. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, nearly 1 in 4 children (23%) two to five years old will have a cavity.
  2. Children who don't get regular preventive dental care may be at higher risk for academic performance problems.
  3. There are large disparities in children's dental care, which indicates a major difference in the ease of access for many underserved populations.
  4. Children in low-income families are 9% less likely to have dental sealants.
  5. Improvements in school-based oral health programs have reduced tooth decay among children by up to as much as 60%.
  6. 51 million hours of school are missed each year due to children's oral health issues.
  7. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry estimates up to 40% of youth oral health injuries are caused by sports. Ask your dentist about mouthguards if you're raising a student athlete!
  8. Tooth decay is 20 times more common than childhood diabetes.
  9. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 7 children has at least one untreated instance of tooth decay.
  10. Children's dental visits are way up! 84.7% of children ages 2-17 had a dental visit within the last year.

Thanks for Reading!

From this list, you can see there are reasons to celebrate children's oral health, reasons to seek ways for more people to access good oral health care, and reasons we need to prioritize our children's oral health.
