Top 7 Facts about National Children’s Dental Health Month

National Children’s Dental Health Month is an important health observance for many different reasons. If we take the time to teach our kids about good oral health habits, it dramatically lowers their risk for tooth decay throughout their lifetimes. Additionally, many of the good oral health behaviors you teach them now are likely to be passed onto their children, which means the good work you do now to ensure your kids keep their mouths healthy may be passed on to your grandchildren.

We’ve been promoting this month’s message of good oral health for kids by giving you ways you can get involved. This week we’re going to share some interesting facts to give you a better understanding and some additional context of National Children’s Dental Health Month. Here are the top seven facts we dug up about this health observance month:

  1. National Children’s Dental Health Month was started in Ohio in February 1941.
  2. It began as a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio and a one-week event in Akron, Ohio.
  3. The American Dental Association held the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949.
  4. The single day observance for children’s dental health originally sponsored by the American Dental Association became a weeklong observance in 1955.
  5. The event became the month long observance we know today as National Children’s Dental Health Month in 1981.
  6. What began as a small event in two cities in the Midwest, has now grown to become a nationwide health observance month.
  7. The ADA’s message of good oral healthcare for kids reaches millions of people during National Children’s Dental Health Month through schools, local events, dentist sponsored activities, military bases, exhibits, health fairs, and presentations.
