Fluoride Treatment

Christopher and Anne Thompson, DDS: Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a mineral that exists in varying amounts in foods and water supplies. The benefits of fluoride are supported by many health and professional organizations have been well known for more than 50 years.

One of the most effective methods of preventing tooth decay is fluoride treatments administered by your dentist or dental hygienist. Fluoride is typically administered in two ways:

Topical Fluoride:

Topical fluoride is used to strengthen once they start showing. Topical fluoride seeps into the tooth's surface enamel, which makes teeth more decay-resistant. People are exposed to topical fluoride through many dental hygiene items such as tooth pastes and mouth rinses. In general, most dentists and dental hygienists will recommend administering two professional fluoride treatments for children twice each year during regular dental appointments.

Avoid the Grit and Icky Taste with Profisil® Fluoride Varnish

At our Turlock dental practice, we proudly offer Profosil® topical fluoride varnish. It offers the same protection for your teeth as other varnishes, but without leaving a gritty sensation and yucky aftertaste in your mouth. If you've ever declined a fluoride varnish treatment in the past because you didn't like the leftover taste and grit, give Profosil® a try.

Systemic Fluoride:

This type of fluoride can be used to strengthen teeth before and after they erupt through the gums. We uptake systemic fluoride mostly through the foods we eat and the water we drink, since most community water supplies these days contain fluoride. Systemic fluoride can also be administered as a supplement, sometimes in the form of drops or gel. Be careful to monitor the amount of fluoride your family consumes with your dentist. Too much fluoride can cause a condition called fluorosis, in which tiny white spots become visible on the teeth.

Although most people receive fluoride from food and water, sometimes it is not enough for remineralization to occur to adequately prevent tooth decay. As a result, your dentist or dental hygienist may recommend the use of home and/or professional fluoride treatments.

Remember, it takes more than fluoride to prevent tooth decay! The American Dental Association recommends brushing at least twice a day, flossing at least once daily, eating balanced meals, reducing sugar in your diet, and visiting your dentist on a regular basis.
