10 Startling Facts about Teen Tobacco Use

Apr 8 • 1 minute read

This week’s blog post is short, sweet, and to the point. It’s about tobacco, and why you should set aside some time to talk to your teen about it. We spent a couple of hours looking on various health organization websites and put together a list of facts that should scare you silly as a parent. If you’ve ever wondered when the best time would be to bring up tobacco with your kid, here are 10 reasons that say right now:

  1. According to the American Lung Association, if current tobacco trends continue, about 6.4 million kids alive today will eventually die prematurely from a smoking-related disease.
  2. Of adults that smoke, nearly 70% of them started smoking regularly at 18 or younger.
  3. In 2004, nearly 12% of middle school children reported using a tobacco product.
  4. According to the CDC, every day in America 3200 people younger than the age of 18 try their first cigarette.
  5. In 2012, about 23% of high school students used tobacco products including cigarettes, cigars, hookahs, e-cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco.
  6. In 2012, about 7% of middle school students reported using tobacco products, a great decline from 2004, but still a scary statistic.
  7. Every day about 700 teens become daily smokers.
  8. Tobacco use among teens increases the risk factors for other harmful behaviors such as fighting and drug and alcohol abuse. Not all kids who use tobacco will exhibit these behaviors, of course, but it should be noted that teens who use tobacco tend to have a higher probability for certain risky behaviors.
  9. About 10% of high school boys report using smokeless tobacco.
  10. According to the American Cancer Society, only one out of every three young smokers will actually quit. Most kids who light up don’t think about the long term consequences of smoking.
