Each February, we, in the dental industry, celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month. NCDHM is a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of good oral hygiene for kids. Developing healthy dental habits early in life helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems as children grow. Good oral hygiene habits will also make your kids less prone to certain physical health issues as adults. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or caregiver, now is the perfect time to encourage kids to take care of their smiles! Here are seven essential tips for keeping kids’ teeth strong and healthy.
1. Brush Twice a Day
One of the simplest and most crucial habits kids should learn early is brushing their teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Using fluoride toothpaste helps strengthen enamel and prevent cavities. You can make brushing fun for them and make sure they brush long enough by playing a favorite song or using a timer to keep track of time!
2. Floss Every Day
Flossing is just as important as brushing. It removes food particles and plaque from between the teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach. Once a child’s teeth start touching, they should start flossing once a day. Flossing can be tricky for small hands and kids with developing motor skills, so parents may need to jump in and help while kids are little.
3. Eat Tooth-Healthy Foods
A healthy diet is key to preserving healthy teeth. Encourage your kids to eat more fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and whole grains while limiting certain kinds of sugary snacks and drinks. Foods like cheese, yogurt, and leafy greens provide calcium and other nutrients that help keep teeth strong.
4. Teach Your Kids Not to Use Their Teeth as Tools
Kids should be taught not to use their teeth to open packages, tear things, or bite on hard objects like ice or pencils. These habits can lead to chips, cracks, or other dental damage that may require professional treatment. Making sure they don't chew their fingernails is also an important bad habit to stave off.
5. Schedule Regular Dental Care
Regular dental checkups for kids are essential for spotting problems early and keeping teeth clean. Kids should see a dentist at least twice a year for professional cleanings and exams. These visits also give parents a chance to ask questions and get advice on their child’s dental health and mouth growth patterns.
6. Replace Toothbrushes Regularly
Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed. A worn-out toothbrush is less effective at cleaning teeth and removing plaque, so keeping a fresh one on hand is essential. At the bare minimum, swap out your toothbrush with the one your dentist gives after every visit.
7. Make Oral Hygiene Fun
Kids are more likely to stick to healthy habits when they’re fun! Let them pick out their toothbrushes in fun colors or designs. It's OK to use flavored toothpaste when you're trying to get them into a regular cadence of brushing and flossing. Creating a reward system for consistent brushing and flossing can also be a fun thing to encourage good habits..
