Five Bad Habits to Break in 2024 to Conquer Bruxism

Bruxism, or grinding or clenching your teeth, may be causing you to wake up with a sore jaw or contributing to severe wear and tear on your teeth. If you’re dealing with bruxism, the good news is that there are several common bad habits you can break if you want to help conquer this condition. Since it’s the start of a new year, maybe consider one or two of these as a resolution if it helps you achieve greater success with being bruxism-free in 2024.

Focus On Stress Reduction

We could all be working toward a more stress-free life. Don’t let your stress build up without an escape. Find healthy ways to cope with stress. Whether it's taking a walk, practicing deep breathing, or enjoying a favorite hobby, giving stress an outlet can be a game-changer. When you manage stress, your teeth are less likely to experience the negative effects of grinding.

Watch Your Late-Night Snacking

Avoid snacks close to bedtime. Watching this bad habit is a way to achieve greater dental health and lose weight in the new year. When you give your jaws a break before hitting the hay, you reduce the chance of nighttime teeth grinding. Opt for a glass of water instead of a snack, and your teeth and waistline will thank you.

Reduce Your Intake of Stimulants

This is a wonderful resolution to adopt in 2024 for so many different reasons. Stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine can rev up your nervous system, making your teeth more prone to grinding. Consider reducing your intake, especially in the hours leading up to bedtime. Your teeth deserve a break from the stimulation. Allow them to rest AND sleep more peacefully!

Limit Your Screen Time Before Bed

Create a tech-free bedtime routine. Blue light emitted by device screens can interfere with your sleep, contributing to jaw clenching and teeth grinding. Try reading a book or practicing relaxation techniques instead of scrolling through your phone or watching TV before bedtime. Breathwork is a good one to try! Your teeth and your sleep will both benefit.

Stop Biting Your Nails (or Chewing on Pens)

Break the habit of using your teeth as tools. Chewing on non-food items not only damages your teeth but can also contribute to bruxism. Make a conscious effort to use the right tools for the job and save your teeth from unnecessary wear and tear.
