What to Do If You've Knocked Out a Tooth
Getting a tooth knocked out can be scary, but taking quick action can make a big difference. Whether it’s from a fall, accident, or sports injury, here’s what to do right away if you or a family member has knocked out a tooth:
1. Stay Calm and Act Quickly
Time is critical. A tooth has the best chance of being saved if it’s reimplanted within 30 to 60 minutes.
2. Find the Tooth and Handle It Carefully
Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. Avoid touching the root because it’s very delicate and can be damaged.
3. Rinse Gently (If Dirty)
If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saline. If neither is available, use clean water—but do not scrub or use soap.
4. Try to Reinsert the Tooth
If possible, place the tooth back into the socket and have the person bite down gently on a clean cloth or gauze to hold it in place. Don’t try to force it into place.
5. Keep It Moist
If reinserting isn’t possible, store the tooth in milk, a tooth preservation kit (if available), or in the person’s cheek or under their tongue. Never let the tooth dry out.
6. Call Us Immediately
