The spirit of the American Dental Association’s National Children’s Dental Health Month lies in education. Every February, oral health professionals of all stripes come together to make sure parents and caregivers have the resources they need to promote great oral health for their kids.

In this month’s blog post, our practice chose to celebrate that core mission of NCDHM and share some of the best resources for early dental health we’ve found online.

Get the Official Parent’s Guide from the American Dental Hygienists’ Association

Designed as a resource to be sent in follow-up emails to patients, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) is a short, easy-to-read PDF that covers most of the questions and concerns parents will have about oral health topics.

Learn About Bottlemouth Syndrome from the American Academy of Pediatrics

One of the most common types of early childhood tooth decay is bottlemouth syndrome. Learn what to look for so you can spot it and how to prevent it from happening.

Check Out the USDA’s Library of Resources for Infants, Children, and Pregnant Women

A commonly overlooked part of pregnancy is how much it affects the mother’s oral health. Sometimes this issue is not properly discussed in early prenatal care and catches an expectant mother by surprise when she starts getting cavities. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which manages the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, has assembled a great library of resources, including many good ones for pregnant women.

No-Cost or Low-Cost Dental Health Coverage for Eligible Children in California

Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provides affordable or free dental health coverage for kids with certain economic or health needs. The link below takes you to our home state of California to find out how to apply, but the website makes it easy to find resources in other states too.

Find a Dentist if You’re Already Enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP

Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program expand access to regular dental healthcare for eligible patients. If you’re enrolled in one of these programs, this website makes it easy to find a dentist near you.

Thanks for Reading!

This February, we hope you’re able to learn something new that helps reduce the occurrence of early childhood decay. Just like physical health, good oral health sets your child up for success in many ways.
